Please Take Care of Me for the Rest of My Life
by Bolin Shijiang / 柏林石匠

I once thought that I would never meet the right person in this lifetime. The world is so vast, and I move so slowly. What would I do if I never met a good man?
I had long since passed the reckless years of “There are more than three billion men in the world, seven hundred million men in China, so where in the world are there no flowers to pick?” More and more, I came to understand that in an orderly, conventional life, the opposite sex we can become familiar with and then grow close to is truly limited. So limited that I had already prepared myself to “accept someone’s matchmaking, find a suitable man, slowly simmer the relationship until it ripened, and then enter into an ordinary, unremarkable marriage.” Yet at an unexpected turn in my life, I welcomed my other half.
In March 2009, as I watched my father being wheeled out of the operating room, I had absolutely no idea that the doctor walking behind the operating table would become my lifelong partner.
I think that in this relationship, what I give can never surpass what Gu Wei gives. I simply follow my heart, following him all the way without thinking of anything else, but Gu Wei has to consider the future of the two of us. He always jokes, “Lin Zhixiao, these days I don’t even dare make mistakes.”
This man, deep and serious for the vast majority of the time and childish on occasion, has almost completely shaped my understanding of love.
He said, “I will always be by your side, no matter whether things are good or bad.”
I told him, “Even if life were to begin again many times over, in that spring of 2009, I would still fall in love with you at first sight.”
